Rules and Information

The tournament is sanctioned by the Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) and as such is subject to OLA Paperweight Rules and Regulations.  Before the first game Tournament Officials will verify OLA Players and Coaches cards.  Please Note: The OLA will not permit the participation of any player or bench staff whose OLA approved card is not available.

OLA Paperweight Rules and Regulations for Tournament Play

1. Game Length. All games are three 16-minute periods running time, with a buzzer after every two minutes indicating the line change. All players must change at each buzzer; players are not permitted to remain on the floor after a line change buzzer except in situations where there are less than ten players on the bench.

2. Coaching. One coach for each team is permitted on the floor for the purpose of assisting players during various points of play (including positioning and general encouragement), provided there is at least one additional adult on the bench. Coaches are not permitted to carry a stick on the floor or to address the officials. Each team must have one certified coach, one carded trainer, and may have up to three OLA-registered volunteers.

3. Facing Off. A face-off will be conducted at the start of each period and following each goal. For any other stoppage, including the two-minute line change buzzer, possession will be awarded by the officials nearest the location where play was stopped.

4. Penalties. Penalties will not be formally assessed. Where an infraction occurs, play will be stopped and the official will briefly explain the infraction. For major infractions, the official may direct the offending player to the player’s bench for the remainder of the shift. A substitute player will be allowed onto the floor.

5. Contact. Within the dotted line of the defensive zone, defending players are able to create contact by using the Place & Push mechanic on the ball-carrier. A defending player’s stick must be placed on the opponent’s arm before the defending player extends their own arms. This allows the defending player to accurately steer the attacking player away from the goal. Once the attacking ball-carrier is pushed outside of the dotted line, they can continue to be pushed until they no longer have the ball, but cannot be pushed into the boards. Defending players cannot make contact with any attacking players who are not the ballcarrier (similar to field lacrosse) at any time, anywhere on the floor. There is no Place & Push or cross-checking allowed on a non-ball-carrier anywhere on the floor

6. Floor strength. Each team must have five runners and a goaltender at all times, except in circumstances where a major infraction has resulted in an offending player returning to the player’s bench for substitution. Teams are not permitted to “pull” or substitute goaltenders at any point in the game.

7. The Game. Officials in the paperweight division are encouraged to exercise professional judgement when officiating. The goal of both the officials and the coaching staff is to introduce the game to players through instruction and encouragement.

Notwithstanding the regulations above, all Lacrosse Canada playing rules are in effect, aside from:

a. There is no shot clock

b. There is no over-and-back in a short-handed situation

c. There is no 10 second count in a short-handed situation

8. Division Structure. Paperweight tournaments are formatted as non-seeded, round robin schedules where teams do not advance to a championship final.

For 2 Teams Tied

a) Head to Head between the teams tied.
b) If tie still exists, the Goal Average Formula will be used to break the tie. All goals scored in the games during the competition shall be used in the goal average computation. (See Goal Average Formula below)
c) If a tie still exists, the team with least penalties in minutes in all Round Robin games played shall be declared the winner. In the case where the teams have not played the same number of games, the lowest average of the penalties in minutes in all Round Robin games shall be used to declare the winner.
d) If a tie still exists then a coin toss will decide the winner.

For 3 or more Teams Tied

a) The Goal Average Formula will be used to break the tie. All goals scored in the games during the competition shall be used in the goal average computation. (See Goal Average Formula below)
b) If a tie still exists, the team with least penalties in minutes in all Round Robin games played shall be declared the winner. In the case where the teams have not played the same number of games, the lowest average of the penalties in minutes in all Round Robin games shall be used to declare the winner.
c) If a tie still exists then a coin toss will decide the winner.

The Goal Average Formula is defined as follows:
__GF___ = GOAL AVERAGE
GF + GA

The team with goal average closest to 1.0 shall be declared the winner

Tournament Rules and Information

Tournament Structure

Four team tournament playing for the Jammer Championship.

Each team will play the other teams once in a 3 game round robin format. Winner of the competition shall be determined by the team with the best record after the three game round robin of games.

Men’s FIL field lacrosse rules apply except where stated below.

Teams Must Use Designated Bench:

The team listed at top as indicated on schedule, must use the left-hand bench as teams face the field. The team listed at bottom as indicated on schedule, must use the right-hand bench as the teams face the field.

The Game:

All games shall have a winner – no ties. If the score is tied at the end of regulation teams will play sudden-victory overtime.

All games are two 20-minute halves (running time), with a 5-minute halftime break.

Stop-time in the last two minutes of the 2nd half, if the goal differential is 4 goals or less.

One timeout allowed per half, no carry-over.

Automatic Stall Warning Rule (“Get-it-in”):

In the last 2 minutes of all regulation time halves, teams must get the ball in the attack zone and keep it in.

Over Time Procedure (Sudden-Victory):

Before the First Overtime period there is a ONE minute break, teams switch ends.

All Overtime periods are 4-minute, Stop-Time.

No breaks between Overtime periods, teams switch ends after each OT period.

No Automatic Stall Rule in Overtime.  No time-outs in Overtime.

If after four overtime periods no team has scored, the game is over and the winner will be determined by tie-breaking formula.

Draws:

In previous years each half and overtime period started with a draw ball at centre, regardless of man up/down status at the end of the previous half / OT period.  That exception is being removed.  Rule 10.22 (Field Manual) applies (if there was possession in a man down situation at the end of the half / period, possession will remain with that team in the same relative position after switching ends).

Tie-breaking formula.

If after overtime teams are still tied, the tie-breaking methodology listed below will determine the winner.

1 – Least expulsion penalty’s throughout all games played by end of current game.
2 – Least banishment penalty’s throughout all games played by end of current game.
3 – Least personal penalty minutes throughout all games played by end of current game.
4 – Least technical penalty’s throughout all games played by end of current game.
5 – If still tied, Coin toss. Team from the right-hand bench calls the toss.

Order of Finish

The final standings will be based on overall win-loss records.  If there is a 2 or 3 way tie the following tie breaking methodology listed below will determine the final standings.

1 – Team with the best record vs each other (head to head).
2 – GF/(GF+GA)*** for the tournament – only relevant for 3 way tie
3 – Team with the fewest goals against for the tournament.
4 – Team with the least expulsion penalty’s for the tournament.
5 – Team with the least personal fouls for the tournament.
6 – Team with the least technical fouls for the tournament.
7 – A coin toss will determine the winner.

*** In the spirit of The Jammer (“Remember to always pass the ball to everyone around you, not just those to that will catch it and put it in the net, but to those that might fumble it, for they will catch it in their hearts and remember you for the pass”), the maximum GF for any game will be 7 more than the GA.

– i.e. if Team A beats Team B 12-1 the tie breaker will use 8 as the GF and 1 for the GA for that game

All tournament Committee’s decisions are final.
